MANILA, Philippines—Jessie Ano bested fellow ultramarathon specialist Pepito Diapera to rule The North Face Thrill of the Trail 22K race held Sunday inside Nuvali in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.
The 24-year-old Ano had no trouble negotiating the dirt trail that also included two kilometers of river crossing to finish in one hour, 30 minutes and 14 seconds.
Diapera, who won the inaugural The North Face 100K race in Batangas two years ago, crossed the finish line in 1:36:50, just nine seconds faster than one-armed runner and Philippine Skyrunning Association member Isidro Vildisola.
“The course was tougher than the previous trail runs I encountered but I am used to the conditions,” said Ano, who also topped last year’s Botak 100K run where Diapera placed third.
The women’s top finishers were Mery Go (2:31:24), Pen Nepomuceno (2:36:30) and Normita Adaza (2:41:00).
The 11K winners were Ronaldo Salgado (47:11), Angelo Gonzalo (47:31) and Mark Neil Peralta (48:05) in the men’s category while Genevieve dela Peña (1:08:24), Tatax Almoro (1:08:31) and Lakambini Larocque (1:10:00) ruled the distaff side.
Nuvali, a 1,750-hectare property of Ayala Land, will host anew the Dirt Weekend bike race in October. “We carefully plan our trail courses so runners can have a break from the usual road races,” said Nuvali general manager Jun Bisnar.
